A Dance with the Dark

I picked up a fairy tale and started reading...

An ordinary woman gets pulled into the magical realm of Skeleton Woman and finds herself in the depths of her own psyche on a path towards reconciliation. An original play written, directed, and choreographed by Christina O’Reilly, who first read the Inuit Fairytale of Skeleton Woman in “Women Who Run With the Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola-Estes. It struck a chord. 12 years later the play emerges. Using prose poetry, found sound, movement, and collaborative invention by the actors to bring it to life. Starring Jennifer Weil*, Wendy Follen, Bob Engel, Miyaka Cochrane, and Brooke Schulte.

The original fairytale:
A king throws his daughter off a cliff for some reason no one can quite remember. She rolls into the ocean where she abides for a long time and her flesh rots away. She is hooked by a fisherman, gets tangled up in his line, and dragged to shore. There he untangles her. Exhausted the fisherman goes to sleep. She sees a tear in his eye—yet another kind of water. She drinks fully, takes out his heart and beats on it as she would a drum. To its thumps and pounds, her flesh comes back. She puts back his heart, lies down with him, and their hearts entwine.
